> Full name is Rafael Nadal Parera (Nadal is his father’s last name and Parera is his mother’s). Nicknamed "Rafa”.

> Began playing tennis at age 4 with his uncle and longtime coach Toni.

> Swings left-handed but writes right-handed. Played with 2-handed forehand before his uncle Toni made him change at age 9.

> Father, Sebastian, is a businessman. Among his businesses are the family-owned Sa Punta restaurant and the Vidres Mallorca glass-and-windows company. Mother, Ana Maria, is Rafa Nadal Foundation president; sister, Maria Isabel.

> Uncle, Miguel Angel, is a former pro football player with stints on FC Barcelona, Real Mallorca and Spanish national team that competed in 1994, 1998 and 2002 World Cup. Won the Champions League title with FC Barcelona.

> Comes from same island as his coach Carlos Moya (Mallorca).

> In October 2010, opened Rafael Nadal Tennis School in Anantapur, India, which hosts tournaments and puts equal emphasis on education and tennis training.

> Underwent appendicitis surgery in November 2014 and right ankle surgery in November 2018.

> Considered ending 2019 season in March after tearing right knee tendon at ATP Masters 1000 Indian Wells. Went on to win 12th Roland Garros title.
